Projects & Activities
Please note: For any of the suggested research projects below, students can use the above links to assist their research in addition to their own Google searches. Students can also choose any mode of showing their work. Below are some suggestions:
- PowerPoint, poster, Interactive notebook, lapbook, home video, arts & crafts (drawing, painting, coloring etc.), report format and any other format students prefer.
- Create an interactive natural glass map. You can use the link at Mindat.org for clickable mines around the world. For more detailed instructions on creating the map, here is a link to the Apatite page , and scroll down to where it says Create an Apatite Varieties Poster Map.
- Find out about natural glass's history using the following key types: Lechatelierite, Tektites, Libyan Desert Glass, Fulgarites, and Moldavite.
- How are natural glasses made in nature?
- What are some of the theories behind how Libyan Desert Glass was created?
- Research the history behind King Tut's Libyan Desert Glass scarab pendant.
- Research how people create Fulgarites artificially (warning: Creating Fulgarites entails extreme high temperatures and is typically a dangerous process and should not be done without adult supervision).
- Go mining for natural glass if you are within driving distance of a mine
